Questions

Please read the following questions and answers provided to familiarize yourself with various aspects of this Access training.

Why is this course helpful for Native Americans?

The creator of this training course has over 10 years of experience working with various tribes around the country.  Many Access courses are provided throughout the nation, but not necessarily in a manner most easily absorbed by those working within a tribal community.  The Access training is designed to teach you through experience, and with respect to a database that you can personally relate to.  Other resources are helpful, but usually they make the most sense after having taken a live Access training.

Do I have to be Native American to attend the Access training?

No.  Once you understand database principles, you can apply your new skills to any particular format.  Though the instructor has significant experience working with Native American tribes, he also teaches individuals how to run databases for their own purposes.  Art galleries, doctor offices, public relation firms, veterinarian clinics, retail outlets, etc. all have a need to manage data flow and keep track of people, clients, projects, etc.  Microsoft Access can work for anyone who needs to process data.

How is this course different from using a manual?

Most people do not experience their best learning from manuals.  Some database concepts are difficult to grasp at first, especially when referring to a text book.  An instructor-led training can expedite the learning process so you can move through stumbling blocks quickly.  Also, there is a benefit in working within a group environment that can stimulate faster learning for everyone.

Who is this course for?

This training is well suited for those in one of several situations:

  • You have little or no database training

  • You have been assigned to manage a database

  • You need to create or purchase a new database system

  • You need to produce numerous reports from a database

  • You need to automate the information flow in your office

  • You want to perform data analysis & statistical calculation easily

  • You are considering self-employment, and need this skill set

Will this course help someone with no computer experience?

When you fill out the Registration Agreement, you will indicate your level of experience with various operating systems (Windows 98, ME, 2000 or XP) and Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Access, etc.).  If a class forms with more experienced users, you may be assigned to a later class in order to allow your learning to be maximized.  Each prospective student will be pre-qualified so as to create the optimum learning environment.  If someone has little or no computer experience, but exhibits an excellent attitude toward learning new things, they would very likely be included with other students who have more general computer experience.

Will I be able to create a database for my tribal court office?

Whether you work in tribal court, law enforcement, Title VI, social services, head start, etc., you will be able to take the principles learned and apply them toward designing a customized database to meet the needs of your department.  The instructor has had experience with virtually all departments within tribal government and can provide insightful suggestions as you build your product.

Where will I stay in Santa Fe during the Access training?

Santa Fe has a large number of hotels, with a range of prices to meet your budget.  The closer you are to the downtown plaza, the higher the price will be, typically.  Please see the Links section to lookup some hotels and choose one that accommodates your budget.  Even if you choose a place at the south end of town, you will only be 20 minutes from the training center.

Can you come to our business location to do the training?

Yes.  As a separate service, the instructor can spend a week at the client site performing the training.  This option can allow for significant savings as the training fee is not based on the number of attendees, but instead is a fixed sum.  The client will pay for instructor airfare, lodging, car rental, and some other minor expenses in addition to the on-site training fee.  Please contact the instructor to receive a quote for an on-site training.  Keep in mind that the service provided is primarily on educating the staff on developing an Access database themselves.  If your needs require the development of an Access database, with less emphasis on employee training, Venture Consulting can submit a separate proposal for that purpose.

Will I have a fully developed database by the end of the course?

The purpose of the Access training is to train you and educate you on fundamental database design & usage.  In the course of the training, you will actually begin designing a database product for yourself, but the emphasis will be on getting you to absorb as much information as practicable so you can continue to create a working product.  Databases can take anywhere from a few hours to several months to create, depending on the complexity and number of users and needs involved.

How do I get to Santa Fe from where I am?

If you are outside of New Mexico, make your flight reservations to Albuquerque.  You can rent a car at the airport, then exit the airport, following signs for I-25.  Head north on I-25 for just under an hour and fifteen minutes.  Depending on the hotel you have chosen, you will either take the Cerrillos exit or the following St. Francis exit, both heading north into town.   The Access training will take place in the Boardroom at the La Fonda hotel, which is on the southeast corner of the downtown plaza.  You can ask for specific instructions to the plaza from your hotel front desk.  It would be least expensive to find parking a few blocks outside the plaza, or you can use the parking structure inside the La Fonda building.  Parking rates at La Fonda are $9 per day.

Can this course be helpful to an experienced Access user?

Absolutely.  Everyone who works with Access will have various holes in their training, areas that at the time were either overlooked or intentionally put off.  Your expertise in Access will grow faster by availing yourself to the experience this Access training has to offer.  You can focus on new techniques and areas that have caused you problems in the past.  You can focus on learning database concepts and tricks that have eluded you in the past.  You can deepen your understanding to create a more robust, feature-rich database back in your working environment.

If I wanted to take the course again, will I get a discount?

Yes.  For those who have already taken the course within the last 2 years, you may apply for registration as a Returning Student.  The tuition for Returning Students is discounted 30% from the current tuition fee.  Returning Students will find that the initial principles learned will be even more firmly planted in their minds, strengthening their Access skills significantly.

What is the best way to retain what I learn during the training?

After the Access training, make sure you allocate time (for example, Friday afternoons or Wednesday mornings) to take the skills you learned and apply them to creating or improving your own Access database.  In addition, visit your local bookstore and check out the latest books on the version of Access you have (whether it is Access 97, 2000 or XP).  Pick a page at random in any one of these books to see if you like the style, or browse through the index to see if it has the kind of detail you want.  Finally, be sure to email or call the instructor with questions as soon as you have them - do everything you can to keep the information fresh in your mind.
